Calling All Classic Car Enthusiasts! The Ponte Vedra Auto Show Is September 15

Vintage cars may not win any aerodynamics or crash test awards, but they are works of art. Classic cars were drafted by hand with aesthetics in mind. They represent everything that seems quintessentially American—the efficiency of the production line, the engineering marvel of modern interstates and bridges, the thrill of independence, freedom and individuality, and the Sunday afternoon leisure afforded by prosperity. No wonder Americans love antique cars and classic car shows.

What Qualifies as a Classic Car

The Classic Car Club of America recognizes vehicles manufactured between 1925 and 1948. The Antique Automobile Club of America requires a car to be 25 years old to be a “classic” and 50 years old to be “antique.” Each auto show has its own rules about which cars qualify.

To qualify for antique plates in the state of Florida, cars must be at least 30 years old.

Florida’s Favorite Classic Car

The most popular classic car in Florida is the 1969 Charger, according to American Collectors. Interested in what’s hot in other states? Check out the complete list. The Dodge Charger debuted in 1966, marketed as “the Leader of the Dodge Rebellion.”

Inspired by the Plymouth Barracuda and the Ford Mustang, a model of the Charger was made its debut at auto shows in 1965. The public was told that it was just an “idea,” but if they wanted it, Dodge would built it.

Charger sales were boosted by a couple of high-profile pop-culture appearances. In the 1968 film Bullit, a black Dodge Charger R/T 440 chased a Ford Mustang GT through the streets of San Francisco. Consequently, some critics regard this as the most influential chase scene in cinema history.

Similarly, in the television show The Dukes of Hazard, a 1969 orange Charger named “The General Lee” performs a jump or stunt in nearly every episode.
