#0973 Assistant Director Agricultural Policy Division

The Assistant Director of Ag Policy provides support to the Division Director in policy development and implementation efforts through regulatory and legislative involvement.
They utilize strong interpersonal and communication skills to build rapport with Florida Farm Bureau (FFBF) members, staff, and state and federal agency personnel and elected officials in order to reach policy objectives.
They work with specific FFBF commodity and/or issue Advisory Committees and become informed about the topics therein.
They must have the ability to grasp agricultural related policy initiatives, programs and/or agency rules and communicate those programs to other staff and/or members.


Policy Development
o Staff 3-4 commodity and/or issue based Advisory Committees
o Plan and execute semiannual committee meetings
o Plan and execute a comprehensive committee conference biannually
o Stay current on all issues related to responsible commodities; disseminate industry news and information to committee members
o Provide member selection recommendations to leadership for Florida and American Farm Bureau committees
o Assist Farm Bureau members in developing language for sound policies
o Assist Director with Resolution’s Sessions at Farm Bureau Annual Meeting
o Recommend applicable Farm Bureau resolutions for American Farm Bureau policy
Policy Implementation
o Develop plans for implementation of Farm Bureau policies on the local, state and federal level
o Schedule appropriate agency and/or legislative meetings for Farm Bureau members and staff to attend to discuss solutions to achieve policy objectives
o Plan targeted fly-ins with relevant Farm Bureau staff to Tallahassee and Washington, DC for Farm Bureau members to meet with lawmakers; assist members with talking points

o Write issue briefs notifying the membership of new and/or updated legislation and federal agency rules and regulations
o Write and submit comments to the Federal Register on rules and regulations according to Farm Bureau policy
o Attend state and federal Farm Bureau policy implementation

Commodity Specialist
o Represent Farm Bureau at industry meetings, conventions and tradeshows
o Liaison to the University of Florida/IFAS departments related to responsible commodities
o Develop agenda and host Ag Policy Summer Webinar Series with topics rooted in commodities
o Represent and speak on behalf of Farm Bureau on industry committees and associations
o Provide quotes to media on current commodity issues
o Provide advice to Farm Bureau leadership and State Board of Directors
o Assist Director in coordinating the County Action Partnership (CAP) program
o Coordinate Farm Bureau internship program
o Coordinate and host annual youth outreach partnerships with the University of Florida/IFAS Florida Youth Institute and the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University Ag Discovery program
o Plan and execute farm tours for various groups
o Plan and execute FFBF State Board of Directors traveling board meeting farm tour
o Plan and execute staff retreat upon request of leadership
o Assist with Home field Agvantage at UF and FSU football games
o Serve as a judge for Farm Bureau, FFA, 4-H and other competitions

Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university (Agricultural Degree Preferred) with 1 to 3 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. An agricultural background is preferred.

Must possess ability to absorb, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports and business correspondence. Must possess necessary computer skills to research, compile and present data in a variety of formats. Must be capable of effectively presenting information and responding to questions from a variety sources. Should have sound verbal, written and virtual communication skills. Must be capable of developing, preparing and presenting reports to staff, membership or others on various agricultural related issues. Should have ability to interact with the media through interviews and written comments.

Ability to solve practical problems and situations where only limited information exists. Must be able to interpret a variety of instructions and information furnished in written, oral, or other formats. Must be capable of rationally thinking through practical problems and situations. Must have ability to analyze and interpret legislation, proposed rules and regulations.

Frequent in state and out of state travel will be required and should be conducted in the upmost professional manner. It is estimated the employee will travel an estimated 25 hotel nights per year.
